A cat and a dog, both of which were abandoned and drowned in the waters off South China Sea, were found to have died of hypothermia in the ocean.
The cats, which had been kept as pets in the country, were brought to shore in a dinghy.
Their owners, who were not identified, have since taken them back to China.
The discovery was made in July 2016 in the South China Seas, and is the first confirmed death of a pet in the area, according to the People’s Daily.
China’s government, which is in the midst of a severe economic downturn, is trying to address the issue by increasing the number of pets in pet stores, which were previously limited to the city of Shenzhen.
The pet trade has been banned in the past, and many cities have closed down pet stores altogether, according the China Daily.
